Spring and the Nashua International Sculpture Symposium are just around the corner! May is Nashua Sculptures Month and time to celebrate the twelfth annual Nashua International Sculpture Symposium. Three international sculptors will be spending three weeks at The Picker Artists at 3 Pine Street in Nashua, each creating a large granite or metal outdoor sculpture to be given to the City and installed in a public place for all to enjoy.

Truly a community project, the public is encouraged to welcome the sculptors, host them in their homes, provide meals, visit the sculptors as they work, learn about their cultures and thank them at the Closing. Nashua is the only city in the United States with an annual international sculpture symposium. Google Nashua Sculpture Symposium to view all the sculptures.

The 2019 Symposium sculptors are Jon Barlow Hudson from USA, Gerard Oroo Motondi from Kenya, and Jocelyn Pratt from New Zealand. The sculptors will be directed by John Weidman, sculptor, co-founder and director of the Andres Institute of Art, Brookline, NH and Jim Larson, graduate of Hamilton College as Studio Art Major with Concentration in Sculpture, and Studio Manager at Andres Institute of Art.

The Opening Reception is Thursday, May 9th from 6 to 8 pm at Hunt Community’s newly opened Great Room at 10 Allds Street, Nashua, NH. The public is encouraged to attend and welcome the 2019 sculptors to Nashua. Enjoy locally prepared food, beverages and don’t miss this unique occasion to meet the international sculptors. Entertainment welcoming the international sculptors will be provided by local artists.

The 2019 Symposium theme ‘Evolve’ is apt as both the worksite venue and Opening Reception locations have changed from last year. Gail Moriarty, Managing Partner of The Picker Artists, remarks, “We are thrilled to welcome the Symposium sculptors into our space. The energy and collaboration will introduce us and the sculptors to new skills and cultures.” John Parolin, Director of Marketing for Silverstone Living, added, “We have partnered with the Symposium for several years now, providing food for previous Opening Receptions. Having the 2019 Opening Reception in our beautifully renovated community space is a continuation of our partnership, welcoming the public and exposing our residents to the Symposium.”

The public is welcome to visit 3 Pine Street as the sculptors work Monday through Saturday, 9:30am to 5pm from Monday May 13th through Wednesday May 29th. The Symposium culminates with the Closing on Saturday, June 1th at 1pm. Everyone is welcome to meet behind City Hall. Trolleys will be available to take people to the three new installations or people can follow in their cars.

Tickets ($15) to the Opening Reception may be purchased On Line or at the door.

Nashua is the only city in the US that has an annual international sculpture symposium. Each year since 2008 international sculptors come to Nashua for three weeks in May to create public art. Truly a community project, residents host the artists in their homes, bring meals as they work, provide transportation, and interact with the artists as they create. Currently over 20 sculptures are installed throughout the City for the public to see and touch.
